Launch of a new course

The School of Nursing and Midwifery (QUB) is delighted to announce the launch of a new course for Carer Advocates that commenced in September 2006

Certificate for Carer Advocates: in Psychosocial Models of Care and Management

The demand for the course was based on the recognition that carers for people with a mental illness play an extremely important role in helping the recovery process of the person who is unwell. Carers also have their own needs, which not infrequently they overlook.  The Development of the crucial role of Carer Advocate by a local, non-profit, organisation and registered charity CAUSE (Carers and Users Support Enterprise) was in direct response to meeting the needs of carers.

The team are equipping students with a number of valuable skills such as critical observation skills and the ability to think quickly and decisively in potentially stressful situations. The panel particularly noted the team’s responsiveness to the needs of the students according to their level of experience."

Human Patient Simulators

The School has recently purchased a new adult patient simulator. Simman 2 is the latest update from Laerdal that has a patent monitor with touch screen technology which can provide snapshot x-rays and 12 lead ECG trends...

The School was also the first in the UK to take possession of “Simbaby” the latest technological tool produced by Laerdal. SimBaby is a high-tech robotic simulator that breaths, has a pulse and maintains heart rhythms and blood pressure. It can be programmed to simulate a range of illnesses and medical emergencies including cardiac arrest and breathing difficulties...

Adding to our simulation models the School also have 2 “Nursing Kids”...
