
The School of Nursing and Midwifery hosted the Ninth Annual Cochrane in Ireland Conference on the 25th January 2013. The conference was held within Queens University Belfast was attended by over 70 delegates from across the Island of Ireland and the UK. Michael Burton, the director of the UK Cochrane Centre delivered the key note address, and highlighted the pivotal roles Cochrane Reviews make in health care. Speakers showcased recent Cochrane Reviews and discussed the impact that such reviews have of health care policy and practice. The conference also presented delegates with the opportunity to participate in workshops focusing on conducting systematic reviews, grade and interpreting systematic review results and teaching evidence based practice. The conference was run in conjunction with Dublin City University and was sponsored by the Health & Social Care R&D Division of the Public Health Agency of Northern Ireland and the Health Research Board of the Republic of Ireland sponsored the poster prize. The poster prize was won by Dr Karen Galway for her Cochrane review which examined the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions provided to newly diagnosed cancer patients, to help individuals cope with the diagnosis and early treatment phase of a cancer journey.
