Clare started her nursing career at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s as an undergraduate pre-registration student in 2004. Clare undertook the BSc (Hons) in Nursing Sciences (Adult Nursing) and successfully completed the programme in 2007 gaining registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Clare took up a post in orthopaedics in Musgrave Park Hospital following registration and spent a year and a half gaining experience in this area. Clare then moved to a post in oncology at the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology in the Belfast City Hospital. Clare spent a further year and a half in the Cancer Centre focussing on oncology and palliative care in the head and neck and gastroenterology ward. During this time Clare also embarked on postgraduate study with the School, starting a MSc in Nursing in 2008. The Masters programme is available on a part-time basis and Clare was able to complete the programme in two years while continuing to work full-time and gain valuable post-registration experience. Building on her experience in the Cancer Centre, Clare’s dissertation was based on a literary review of the use of the oral chemotherapy drug Capecitabine.
Following completion of her Masters studies in 2010 Clare decided to transfer on to a Doctoral pathway and has since commenced a PhD with the Nursing and Midwifery Research Unit. Clare was able to secure a career break from her full-time post and will focus on palliative care throughout her doctoral studies to enable her to bring the benefit of these studies back in to clinical practice.
