Denise Boulter

Denise Boulter originally commenced her nurse training in 1989 successfully completing in 1992 and gaining two years clinical experience in cardiology nursing at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. In 1994 Denise started the shortened midwifery diploma programme at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s. Following completion of the programme in April 1996, Denise registered as a qualified midwife and took up a post in the neonatal unit in the Royal. Three months after her midwifery registration, Denise secured a full-time midwifery post in Antrim Area Hospital. After three years working as an ‘E’ Grade midwife Denise accepted a temporary promotion as a ‘F’ Grade. In 2000 Denise moved to the Mater Hospital in Belfast to start a permanent ‘F’ Grade post in the midwifery-led team. At this stage in her career, Denise decided to update her academic record and undertook a top-up BSc programme on a part-time basis at the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Denise successfully completed the requisite six modules at level 3 to top-up her diploma qualification to degree level and graduated in 2001.

In 2005 Denise was promoted to a ‘H’ Grade post as a lead midwife in the labour ward at the Mater. While in this post Denise completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the School of Nursing and Midwifery between 2007 and 2009 allowing her to record the qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. During 2008 Denise was seconded for three days per week to the DHSS&PS as a Midwifery Adviser and later took up a permanent Nursing Officer post responsible for Midwifery and Children’s Nursing.

On completion of the PGCE at Queen’s, Denise took the option of using her level 7 credits and transferring on to the MSc in Midwifery programme. Denise started the programme in 2010 and is due to graduate with a Masters in 2011. In June 2011 Denise was appointed to the Health Promotion Agency as the first Midwifery Consultant for Commissioning and Public Health.
