Jenny McGowan

Jenny is a qualified neonatal nurse who is currently engaged in a full-time research scholarship at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen’s University. Jenny completed a BSc (Hons) in Nursing Studies at the University of Edinburgh in 2003 and embarked on a career as a neonatal nurse. Following her pre-registration studies, Jenny undertook a Certificate in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing and gained experience in this field working in the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, Gloucester Royal Hospitals and Leicester Royal Infirmary.

In 2008 Jenny was awarded a PhD Studentship at the School of Nursing and Midwifery and is shortly due to complete her PhD studies. Jenny’s research interest is in early childhood development and outcomes of high and low risk infants admitted to neonatal intensive care including neurodevelopment and follow up interventions. Other research interests include neonatal care and nursing the sick neonate, global maternal and child health in developing countries, public health and epidemiology.

Jenny’s PhD thesis focussed on ‘Early Childhood Development of Late Preterm Infants’. During her PhD studies Jenny has been invited to present her work at a number of international conferences including New Zealand, Australia and the USA.

Research has been a constant interest of Jenny’s throughout her pre-registration studies and working as a neonatal nurse. Following completion of her PhD Jenny is considering a number of career options for the future including further research, teaching and taking her research experience back in to clinical practice.
