Marasmawati Haji Meramit

Marasmawati Haji Meramit is enrolled with the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s as an international post registration student. Marasmawati registered in her home country of Brunei as a general nurse following successful completion of the Diploma in General Nursing from Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolikiah College of Nursing in 1998. In line with the country’s nursing orientation programme, Marasmawati gained experience in all areas of general nursing through three month placements including medical wards, maternity and orthopaedics. Following the orientation programme, nurses are asked to elect a post in either medical or surgical expertise and Marasmawati chose surgical, focussing particularly on orthopaedics. In 2006 Marasmawati gained an Advanced Diploma in Orthopaedic Nursing from Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore.

Marasmawati’s clinical experience has been through her posts in the local hospital in Darussalam, Brunei and in 2010 she was promoted to the role of Senior Staff Nurse undertaking a Ward Manager role as well. Traditionally registered nurses in Brunei look to other international universities for postgraduate and post registration training. Through this process Marasmawati applied to the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s in 2010 for a BSc (Hons) in Health Studies programme in the speciality of orthopaedic nursing.

The School has developed a number of specialities for the BSc pathway which allow international students to gain academic knowledge and clinical expertise in their chosen practice. The BSc has a clinical placement option which sets the programme apart from other nursing programmes of study based in the UK and delivered to international students. Marasmawati has observed significant differences in orthopaedics in Northern Ireland in comparison to practice in Brunei and Singapore and aims to take this experience back to Brunei and help develop new practices.

During her studies Marasmawati has used the University’s facilities including the Student’s Union and the PEC and has found the availability of materials through Queen’s on Line particularly useful.
