In May 2011 Margaret Rogan became the first Consultant Midwife to be appointed in Northern Ireland. Margaret is based in the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital in the Belfast HSC Trust and has worked in a number of roles since qualifying as a midwife in 1985. Margaret began her career at the Royal Maternity Hospital in 1984 and has gained experience in all areas of maternity. Her interests include all aspects of Intrapartum Care with a special interest in workforce competence and interdisciplinary working.
With the integration of midwifery education in to Higher Education, Margaret embarked on a series of programmes of study to underpin her clinical experience and help keep her knowledge up to date with a new generation of university educated nurses and midwives. Margaret undertook part-time study while continuing to work full-time beginning with a Royal College of Nursing Diploma in Advanced Studies in Health Care followed by a two-year part-time BSc (Hons) in Health Studies at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s. In 1996 Margaret became a Midwifery Sister in the labour ward and also commenced the MSc in Midwifery at Queen’s. Margaret continued her Masters studies on a part-time basis while dealing with a busy post and working long unsociable shifts. Margaret completed her Masters in 1999.
In 2003 Margaret was selected by the LSAMO to be a Supervisor of Midwives for the Belfast Trust and undertook the requisite Preparation of Supervisors of Midwives programme at Queen’s. Margaret subsequently was appointed Contact Supervisor and Chair of the Supervisors Forum. In 2005 Margaret was successful in gaining a Practice Educator post in the Trust and completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Practice Educator) at the School of Nursing and Midwifery which resulted in a recordable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as well as the academic award.
Margaret is a member of the Royal College of Midwives’ (RCM) Northern Ireland Board and has won two National RCM awards in 2008 and 2010 for innovations in midwifery practice.
