Dr Chen is a national of the People's Republic of China who has recently been appointed as Lecturer in functional genomics in the University. Prior to his arrival in the UK in October 2000 to commence his PhD studies, he was Assistant Director of the Institute of Biotechnology in Fuzhou University in Fujian Province, where he now holds the position of visiting professor. He has authored 37 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and is cited as co-inventor on 11 patents. His major area of research interest is in identification of novel bioactive peptides from natural sources including animal venoms and traditional medicines and he has developed molecular cloning technologies that can rapidly expedite the discovery, structural characterisation and pharmacological effects of novel proteins and peptides. He is also highly involved in the development of new collaborative postgraduate research programmes with universities in the Far East.
