Prof David Hirst is the Professor of Experimental Therapeutics in the School of Pharmacy. He has considerable research experience in tumour physiology, gene therapy and vascular biology and this is applied within the School of Pharmacy to the further development of novel approaches to the treatment of cancer, particularly in combination with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Prof. Hirst has specific expertise in the role of nitric oxide in tumour biology and is using molecular approaches to apply this in anti-cancer strategies. Targeting of tumour vasculature is also a long-standing research interest . Prof. Hirst undertakes research into the identification and characterisation of novel vasoactive and anti-angiogenic peptides of amphibian origin.
