About Civil Engineering at Queen's

Civil Engineering education in QUB is among the oldest in the UK having started in 1845 when Queen’s College was founded. Many eminent civil engineers obtained their education at Queen’s. Currently the School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering provides the education for those who primarily wish to train as professional Civil Engineers within the construction industry.

Civil Engineering, including the specialisms of Environmental Engineering and Structural Engineering, is concerned with the design and construction of a wide range of private facilities and public services. These include schemes such as roads, railways and airports to provide for the movement of people and freight; dams, reservoirs and treatment works to impound and purify water supplies; foundations and structural frameworks for buildings and bridges of all types; river and marine works to control flooding and provide leisure facilities.

Civil engineers require not only technical skills but also are concerned with management and the protection of the environment.

You will find that almost all the advances that have contributed to civilisation as we know it have involved input from civil engineers.

The School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering works closely with the Institute of Civil Engineers.
