The Philosophy Society at QUB, formally known as Academia Philosophorum, is a society founded and run by philosophy students at QUB. It is comprised of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, but focuses on the need to get undergraduates involved in philosophical debates of interest to contemporary philosophers. To that end, the Society tries to hold meetings at least once a month at which a member or invited speaker will present a paper on a philosophical topic of his or her choice, followed by a discussion and a wine reception.
The Philosophy Society believes in the eternal value of a classical education steeped in the arts and humanities. The Philosophy Society does not prize the pursuit of either wisdom or knowledge as simply a means to some technical end, but sees that pursuit as a goal in itself and something to be celebrated. To that end several members of the Philosophy Society are active in student politics and are engaged in campaigning for greater recognition of humanities based subjects.
The Philosophy Society has its own facebook page, which can be accessed through the following link:

The philosophy society at QUB, Academia Philosophorum, has several events planned for 2010 - 2011.
Several members of staff have agreed to give Bryan Magee style interviews that will be held throughout the year. In the first semester, the Director of Philosophy, Prof. Cynthia Macdonald will be our first interviewee (October 27th), and one of our new members of staff, Dr Michail Peramatzis will be our second interviewee (November 24th).
Our Vice President, Michael Faulkner will be offering two papers in November, one on November 3rd on David Hume and God, and the other on November 10th, on the possibility of a scientific morality.
In the second semester we plan to continue with our interviews and various speaking events. Our big event will be our conference on May 11th 2011; the theme is the Philosophy of Philosophy, and we plan to have speakers dealing with various issues concerning philosophy and its relation to other disciplines. The conference will end with a dispute between Dr Charlotte Blease, Gaven Kerr, and Paul Robinson on the nature of philosophy.
Details of all philosophy society events will be posted to all members of our mailing list (if you would like to be included on the society's mailing list, please e-mail the society President, Gaven Kerr: gkerr07@qub.ac.uk).
