Centre for Ethics

The Centre for Ethics was established within the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy in September 2012. The main focus of the Centre’s activities is in the areas of medical ethics, professional ethics, research ethics, business ethics, and applied ethics more generally.

Courses and training in ethics

A core activity of the Centre for Ethics is the provision of education and training in applied ethics. As part of this the Centre has developed (in collaboration with the School of Law at Queen’s University Belfast) a Master’s programme in Medical Ethics and Law. This course will take its first intake in the academic year 2013/14. Further details of this course and information about how to apply for it can be found here

The Centre also provides short courses in areas such as research ethics and standards in public life. Members of staff based within the Centre have considerable expertise in delivering training sessions in these areas within both the UK and Ireland. Training can be carried out either at Queen’s or further afield, and can be tailored to fit your needs. If you are interested in discussing the provision of training in ethics please contact the director of the Centre, Dr Tom Walker, at tom.walker@qub.ac.uk.

Research

In addition to the provision of education and training the Centre for Ethics also aims to provide a focal point both for bringing together those doing research in applied ethics within the University, and in developing collaborations between these researchers and those working on related topics in the UK, Ireland and beyond. Staff associated with the Centre have particular research interests in the areas of:

  • Medical ethics
  • Public health ethics
  • Ethical questions about the provision of information in medical contexts
  • Addiction
  • Children and families
  • Philosophy and public policy
  • Conceptions of responsibility
  • Punishment
  • Moral, legal and political philosophy
