International Politics and Ethnic Conflict

Director of Research Professor Adrian Guelke

The International Politics and Ethnic Conflict (IPEC) cluster reflects the research interests of members of the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy, in relation to the discipline of International Relations and the sub-discipline of Comparative Politics. It also encompasses area specialists on the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe, as well as specialists in security studies, cultural studies, international political economy and international history. The reference in the name of the cluster to ethnic conflict provides an indication of a special interest in the cluster in the study of the politics of deeply divided societies, taking account of the fact of the location of the university in such a society. The Centre for the Study of Ethnic Conflict has provided a focus for this interest in its networking, holding of public lectures etc., as it will do in the future. Aims of the cluster include the promotion of intellectual co-operation among colleagues in these fields so as to facilitate joined-up thinking on these issues that takes advantage of the diverse interests and expertise within the cluster, as well as the promotion of intellectual exchanges among members of the cluster to provide a stimulating environment for the development of members of the cluster, both in collaborative research and in other activities, such as seminars.

The IPEC seminar series in the first semester of 2009/10 will include papers by Professor Andrew Linklater (Aberystwyth) and Professor Kimberley Hutchings (LSE). There will be panel discussions on the subject of ‘Rethinking Borders’ (provisional title), involving Dr Nick Vaughan-Williams (Exeter), Dr Cathal McCall (QUB) and Professor Liam O’Dowd (QUB – Sociology), and on the issue of ‘Biopolitics and Security’ involving, Dr Luis Lobo-Guerrero (Keele), Dr Debbie Lisle (QUB) and Dr Mike Bourne (QUB). Papers will also be given relating to ethnic conflict by Dr Marie Breen-Smyth (Aberystwyth) and Cecil Chabot (Ottawa). A full provisional program can be found here.
