Thesis
The subject of my thesis is the relationship between liberal egalitarian theories of freedom and social justice (focussing particularly on the work of John Rawls) and the idea of socio-economic decentralisation, which is an important aspect of green political theory. I am interested mainly in the extent to which the principles of justice proposed by Rawls, and the theoretical structure within which these principles are situated, are compatible with the provision of opportunities for citizens of liberal democratic states to form self-reliant (as opposed to self-sufficient or autarkic) communities or associations. I am interested also in the practical issues involved with the implementation of welfare and social policies in different local and national contexts.
