My dissertation, entitled: A Story of Citizenship: Diversity, social integration and public policy in the Netherlands is a narrative on developments in Dutch citizenship and integration policies over the past ten years. I have chosen to evaluate citizenship because it links a number of central themes in the analysis of contemporary society: as a concept it sharpens research into social inclusion and exclusion, and can be used as a tool to trace the historical development of political rights. This treatise will speak to a broad social scientific literature on citizenship, nationality, and integration in Europe. The Dutch case study is of particular interest because of the contentious relationship between republican and multiculturalists conceptions of citizenship that has developed in reaction perceived problems with the integration of Muslim immigrants and their children.
