Research
I am researching constitutional nationalism in Northern Ireland. I am examining the Social Democratic and Labour party from Hume until present. I aim to explore why the SDLP was overtaken by Sinn Féin as the largest nationalist party in 2001. My research will involve an examination of the polarising dynamic of the Good Friday Agreement as well as internal problems which the SDLP has faced. I will also examine the ‘Comprehensive agreement’ reached in 2004 and assess how this has affected the SDLP. Although the SDLP is no longer the largest Nationalist party my research aims to discover the current significance and relevancy of the party in Northern Ireland politics, particularly concerning the role it has played in relation to the Northern Ireland Offences Bill and Restorative Justice. I am also exploring the St Andrews Agreement in relation to the SDLP. While exploring the role of the SDLP I will incorporate local case studies into my research
