Thesis

Imperfect Reconciliation – a study into the nature of reconciliation in Northern Ireland. Exploring the models of reconciliation offered by the experiences in Northern Ireland and South Africa.

Renewed interest in initiating a “Truth and Reconciliation” process in Northern Ireland has once again brought the concept of reconciliation into the spotlight. At its core the current debate on reconciliation suggests that a more comprehensive attempt at achieving reconciliation needs to be initiated. This critique raises far-reaching questions on the efficacy of the current attempts at achieving reconciliation. This study therefore sets out to identify, catalogue and evaluate the different types of reconciliation programs and initiatives that have come into existence as a result of the Belfast Agreement.

Areas of Research

My research interests lie primarily in the interface between war endings and post conflict reconstruction. I am interested in the dynamics of conflict in deeply divided societies, transitional justice, conflict resolution and the workings of truth commissions. I have a particular interest in Northern Ireland and South Africa with respect to these themes.
