DChild Doctorate in Childhood Studies

Childhood Studies at Queen's: the interdisciplinary study of children and young people set within historical, cultural, national and global contexts.

Be one of the first to take part in this unique, international and multidisciplinary learning experience, built upon ten years' success in delivering taught doctorates at Queen's University Belfast.

Who should apply? - A wide range of professionals working with children and young people in the statutory, voluntary and community sector. The programme is likely to be of interest to those in the fields of youth and community work, social work, education welfare and child health. It will also appeal to those working more broadly with children in legal, education, social policy, health and social care settings. You will need to already possess a relevant primary degree or its equivalent and normally have an appropriate higher-level qualification.

Course dynamics - DChild can be completed on either a full-time or part-time basis with flexible modules designed to complement the lifestyle and commitments of the modern professional. You will be required to complete four core modules, four optional modules and a dissertation (which is the equivalent of 10 modules). Each module, worth 30 credits, will consist of preliminary reading, an intensive taught element over two and a half days at Queen's and an assignment. If you have an appropriate Masters qualification you can get credit transfer for up to two modules.

Course outcomes will include: a high degree of theoretical and practical evidence-based knowledge, high level cognitive skills in critical analysis, synthesis, interpretation and argument as well as experience of a number of sophisticated, mixed method research skills, presentation, writing and ICT skills.
