Description

The course is designed to provide a fundamental grounding in both quantitative and qualitative research skills along with the opportunity to specialise in more advanced training in quantitative research, qualitative research or in practical applications of research techniques.  The programme consists of taught modules usually given during evenings or at weekends. 

Masters students take four modules plus the double-weighted dissertation module. The Diploma requires the satisfactory completion of four modules. Modules are offered in the following sequence:

In Semester 1 students take:

110SOC912 Theory and Practice in Social Research

and either

110SOC918 Research Placement

or 2 half modules from

105SOC916 Issues in Secondary Data Analysis

105SOC917

Issues in the Advanced Analysis of Qualitative Data
105SOC923 Social Science Research On-line

In Semester 2 students will take:

210SOC907 Qualitative Methodology

and

210SOC908 Quantitative Research Skills

and (Masters only)

320SOC919 Dissertation (to be submitted in September)

Note: In exceptional circumstances, a student with experience or training beyond that offered in SOC907 or SOC908 may take the half module SOC914 Individual Study in a Specialized Topic and one module from SOC915-SOC917.

In part-time mode, students take SOC912 and either SOC907 or SOC908 in year one.
