I began my social work career, following qualification from Liverpool University, as a Probation Officer in Liverpool where I and then worked as a senior social worker with Liverpool Social Services before coming home to Belfast and Queens. My years in Queens have involved work at many levels within the Department of Social Studies and then the School of Social Work. I have had lead responsibilities for both qualifying and post qualifying programmes and was head of School  for three years. I was active in social work politics for many years being chair of both the Merseyside and the Northern Ireland branches of BASW. I have been involved in the development of child care policy and practice in Northern Ireland especially in the area of foster care and adoption.

Teaching

My teaching interests include social work in child care particularly foster care and adoption. I also teach risk assessment and attachment theory to both qualifying and post-qualifying students. I have taught a wide range of courses to social workers in Queens including the history of social work,  social work theory and methods, human development and behaviour and made contributions law teaching.  I am also regularly engaged by the Health & Social Services Boards and Trusts as a trainer / consultant in the area of child care.

Administration

I currently have overall responsibility for the development of the new BSW programme at Queens

Research interests

My main research interests have been social work in child care, including adoption and foster care; child protection and risk assessment. Recently my work has concentrated on the use of adoption as a permanent placement for children in state care and with a colleague we completed a major review of the processes in Northern Ireland (see below)
