Prospective Students

Undergraduate Creative Writing Teaching

The Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry is home to a new undergraduate degree in English with Creative Writing, beginning in 2010/11. Students on this designated creative writing pathway will undertake an introductory module, designed to teach the rules of successful creative writing generally, and to  introduce specific techniques for a wide range of literary modes, including the fairytale, the short story, writing for the stage, screenwriting, radio drama and poetry. Students will then go on to specialise in either prose fiction, poetry or drama. In their final year, students will undertake a creative writing double dissertation in the genre of their choice. Teaching on the double dissertation will be conducted exclusively via one-to-one tutorials.

Details of these module descriptions can be found on the School of English website.

Postgraduate Creative Writing Teaching

The MA in Creative Writing offers students the opportunity to continue their specialisation in either prose, poetry or drama. The study of a chosen genre is augmented by additional modules on life writing, the short story, poetic form, and the poetics of translation. Other modules are designed to enhance students’ research skills, to raise awareness of the ethical issues associated with creative writing, and to equip them with knowledge of the literary marketplace.

Further details of the Taught MA in Creative Writing  and the MA in Modern Poetry  (which is not a Creative Writing MA) can be found on the School of English website.

At the Heaney Centre, students also have the opportunity to study creative writing at the level of PhD. PhDs in creative writing must be comprised of both a creative and critical component, which are interconnected. Teaching on the PhD programme is conducted exclusively via one-to-one supervision.

Further details on PhD studies can be found on the School of English website.
