Career Opportunities

Electrical, Electronic & Software Engineering

There are a range of excellent career opportunities open to graduates in Electrical, Electronic and Software Engineering. Your degree is specifically designed to give you the best possible preparation for a career as a professional engineer in the UK, or almost anywhere in the world.

The courses taught at Queen’s cover a broad spectrum of fields from nanoelectronics through to electric power engineering as detailed in the prospectus. In many, if not all, of these fields of study there is a shortage of engineering graduates, both locally and internationally.  Graduating students are therefore sought after and have a choice of job offers with very competitive salaries and good career prospects.

All of our undergraduate degrees meet the requirements of the UK professional engineering bodies. The range of communication, problem solving, team-working and other transferable skills you will have acquired means that you will also be attractive to employers beyond the engineering sector. The financial sector in particular routinely and enthusiastically recruits engineering graduates. Engineers in fact enjoy some of the highest starting salaries of any graduates.

Computer Science

Northern Ireland has an excellent international reputation for the quality and supply of its software engineers. Indeed many companies, both national and international, have opted for Northern Ireland as a base for their computing divisions in recognition of the high quality of graduates produced by the local universities.

Given this situation, it is not surprising that our graduates have had unparalleled job opportunities over the years, both locally and internationally. Because of the achievements of Queen's graduates already in the software engineering profession, a Computer Science degree from Queen's is a highly respected qualification. A good Honours degree in Computer Science from Queen's is of great benefit in seeking the best jobs.

On graduating the majority of graduates take up posts associated with software design and implementation.  Some embark on management and finance careers, while others undertake research.

Statistics highlight that 94% of  recent graduates were pursuing their chosen pathway within six months of graduation.  As the I.T. market has recovered, current industry analysis indicates that there is a shortage of I.T. graduates and this trend is forecast to continue.
