Course Contents

The wireless channel; example of a wireless channel; radio propagation; link budget; fundamentals of cellular telephony; the concept of cellular communications; multiple access technologies; existing mobile technologies (network elements in GSM/SPRS/UMTS); wireless LANs architectures and CSMA/CD MAC layer

Supplementary Notes

None

Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to:

  • understand the basics and principles behind wireless communications, including the radio channel and multiple access techonlogies such as TDMA or FDMA;
  • demonstrate a knowledge of how to calculate a link budget;
  • understand the functionality of the network elements deployed in GSM and UMTS network architectures;
  • understand the general operating principles of existing mobile technologies (GSM, 3G and WiFi) at the MAC and network layers.

The course should set the basics for further studies in mobile communications which may describe in detail how the LLC and radio layers of 2G and 3G systems work.

Skills

Application of lecture material to the design and operation of mobile and wireless networks.
