Introduction to telephony and networking; analogue and digital telephony systems, PSTN, ISDN, xDSL; signalling using SS7; transmission systems incl. PDH, SDH and next generation optical networks; Broadband ISDN / ATM; ATM adaptation layers; QoS and traffic management; Internet protocols and QoS in IP networks, IP-based applications including VoIP; network security

Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to:

  • Understand the basis and principles behind modern telecommunications systems;
  • demonstrate a knowledge of main access, switching and transmission technologies;
  • understand the future development of optical-networks and their limitations;
  • understand the principles of broadband cell-switching techniques and related quality of service issues;
  • understand internet protocol systems and networks, including key applications.
