Course Content

This module introduces a range of Earth Science techniques in spatial, temporal, quantitative and qualitative data collection, manipulation and analysis. Basic integrated geomorphological and geological mapping for land use and hazard assessment using a blend of traditional skills and Geographical information Systems (GIS) technology will be taught. Training exercises will prepare students for a residential field course (Cyprus).

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the module should: gain a practical understanding of field data collection methods, both theoretically as well as in an outdoor environment, where land use, water supply, earthquake, heritage management issue can all be explored.

Supplementary notes

This module includes a requirement to participate on a residential field trip (Cyprus), normally scheduled for either Week 10 of Semester 2 or during the Spring / Easter vacation. Students must make themselves available to attend the field class, which will be at their own expense. Previous student contribution required for equivalent course approx £500 towards the cost of flights, hotel accommodation and coach hire excluding meals (an additional cost). The field class charge is subject to change, and this may be dependent upon matters outside our control such as the price of fuel.
