GGY3001 - Dissertation

Course Content

This module will require you to write a dissertation or an extended piece of geographical research that is based on your collection/collation of information, data or other material that has geographical relevance. The dissertation presents the evolution of your thoughts on a specific theme, informed by geographical concepts and ideas. This module draws upon skills from other modules offered in the School, which relate to subject-specific and key skills, and applies them to this piece of independent research known as a Dissertation. Your work does not have to be original, only that the work is new to you.

For students enrolled in the BSc. Single Honours Geography and BSc. Single Honous with Extended Studies in Europe programmes only.

Learning Outcomes

On completing this module students should have the confidence to: conduct independent research; select and formulate a topic for research; define clear research aims and objectives; undertake bibliographic searches, to assimilate and present a coherent appraisal of the various primary and secondary documents; have a critical understanding of related literature across disciplines; produce, collate, synthesise and analyse data from diverse sources; appreciate the strengths of the discipline of geography in dealing with scale issues; develop, sustain, and present consistent and logical arguments through effective prose in English; produce a cogent, well-illustrated dissertation.
