Geography at Queen’s provides students with an understanding of the past and present processes that lead to the world’s modern physical and human environments. Students gain insight into the major global, regional and local problems that these environments face and how human and physical geography can help meet the challenges of environmental change.

This is done through a range of methods including field classes to countries such as Spain and Malta, which allow students the opportunity to experience how geography is applied - in the real world.

BSc Single Honours Geography Programme - 3 Years (UCAS Code: F800)


Geography is one of the few subjects in which human and physical aspects of the environment are integrated. At Queen's, our flexible degree programme enables students to gain an understanding of the major global, regional and local processes that shape our world.


Entry Requirements (2013-2014)

A level – BBB + GCSE Mathematics


Course Content

Our degree programme provides fundamental skills and knowledge while allowing you to tailor your degree according to your interests and ambitions.

Year 1 You will take a foundation year of Human and Physical Geography modules: Dynamic Earth Environmental Issues Human Geographies of the Modern World Researching Globalisation

The modules are delivered through combinations of lectures, tutorials, practical classes and field work and provide an introduction to the subject and the inter-connections between global and regional scales.

Year 2 Student can choose to undertake human or physical geography-based modules. Single Honours students have an opportunity to attend a residential field course in the second semester.

Level 3 Students undertake a dissertation where you can tailor your degree according to your interests. You also select five other specialised modules which vary from year to year.

BSc Single Honours Geography with Extended Studies in Europe - 4 Years (UCAS Code: F8RX)


For students who wish to continue their students with Geography and a language they will undertake a similar programme as BSc Geography, with the addition of a year of study in a European city.  The School has many links with universities in both Spain and France and each student’s progress is monitored throughout their year abroad.  Please note that the study year abroad scheme will be in Year 3 of the programme.  Students will return to complete the final year of their degree within Queen’s.


Entry Requirements (2013-2014)

A-level – BBB + GCSE Mathematics

For French Option: A-level French grade B

For Spanish Option: A-level Spanish grade B

Course Information

BSc Joint Honours Archaeology Palaeoecology and Geography - 3 Years (UCAS Code: VF48)


Palaeoecology at Queen’s studies environmental evidence to assess the impact of natural events and human activities on landscapes, climate and the changing environments.  Using both fossil and genetic evidence including plants, microscopic pollens and sediments, these modules examine themes such as ancient environments, evolution, economic and climate change. 

Palaeoecology students also have access to world class facilities including a Radiocarbon Accelerator Mass Spectrometry 14 CHRONO Laboratory.  Students gain valuable skills through access to these facilities and the data which is made available through various samples.

FIELDWORK

Year 2 students have the option of taking a field class module abroad, currently in Cyprus, Mallorca or Malta.  This gives students the opportunity to experience aspects of geography in their natural environment.
