Space and spectacle: science and religion at the British Association
My PhD research builds on work on the historical geographies of knowledge, examining public encounters between science and religion that took place under the auspices of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. I'm paying attention to the role of rhetorical spaces and public spectacle in shifting and staging the boundaries between science and religion in the nineteenth century. Particular attention is given to the homiletic literature attached to the Association.
Case studies include the Cork (1843), Edinburgh (1850), Bath (1864), Bristol (1875) and Montreal (1884) meetings of the British Association, as well as an overview of the the sermons preached at the BAAS during the 1870s. SInce completing my PhD I have been working on an article on W. H. Dallinger in Montreal, 1884.
