Current Research (

Environmental Change

My research is largely focused on the decay and conservation/management of stone heritage from a geomorphological and environmental/climate change impacts perspective. My PhD investigated the impact of complex stress histories (sequences of lime rendering, fire, frost and salt weathering) on the decay of historic stone structures and the conservation implications of these stress histories. Since completing my PhD (May 2007), I have been employed on several EPSRC funded projects investigating the catastrophic decay of building limestones and the application of geostatistical techniques to weathering studies. Most recently, I was postdoctoral research fellow on the EPSRC funded project “Climate change, ‘greening’ of masonry and implications for the decay of built heritage and new build”, seeking to understand the greening and deterioration of sandstone walls under wet conditions (see here). In 2011 I received a Queen's Impact Award (sponsored by EPSRC), for the purpose of communicating this research to a wider audience, particularly conservation practitioners - these can be viewed here. I was awarded chartered geographer status in 2011. From 2012-2014 I was PI on an Historic Scotland Research Fellowship (in the area of climate change and heritage science).
