BA Hons Archaeology - 3 Years (UCAS Code: V402)
Archaeology at Queen’s explores ancient worlds, past civilisations and the emergence of humans from their origins to complex historical societies. This diverse discipline embraces many practical and scientific methods, as well as ideas and models that aim to explain how and why events and processes took place in the past.

There are no specific subject requirements to study Archaeology and Palaeoecology, although the following subjects have been helpful in the past:

Course Content
BA students normally enter at Level 1 and take six Level 1 modules. Single Honours students normally take four Archaeology/Palaeoecology Level 1 modules. Students on programmes other than Single Honours normally take four (Major Honours), three (Joint Honours) or two (Minor Honours) Archaeology/Palaeoecology Level 1 modules, as appropriate for their intended pathway.
Level 1 modules covering the two disciplines are designed to serve as broad introductory courses and assume no previous knowledge. They may be of general interest to students intending to take another subject as their main degree, but who wish to enhance their knowledge of their human and environmental past and of heritage issues. These wide-ranging modules are a preparation for those taken in the second and third levels.
Modules in Levels 2 and 3 explore in detail the themes introduced in Level 1 and allow for specialisation and the development of practical skills. Level 2 modules provide skills and concepts necessary for the dissertation that may be taken at Level 3 for Single Honours students, and for future employment in Archaeology.

MSci Hons Archaeology - 4 Years (UCAS Code: V403)
Archaeology at Queen’s offers students the opportunity to apply for a Master of Science (MSci) programme. This provides a Masters qualification, completed in Year 4 of the course. Students have the option of undertaking further study in the areas of Professional Archaeology, Dating and Chronology, Archaeology and Environment or Heritage Science.

Course Content
Following modules from Level 1 - Level 3 students can choose to extend their learning by focusing on one of these key areas:
BSc Single Hons Archaelogy Palaeoecology - 3 Year (UCAS Code: V400)
BSc Joint Hons Archaeology Palaeoecology and Geography - 3 Years (UCAS Code: VF48)
Palaeoecology at Queen’s studies environmental evidence to assess the impact of natural events and human activities on landscapes, climate and the changing environments. Using both fossil and genetic evidence including plants, microscopic pollens and sediments, these modules examine themes such as ancient environments, evolution, economic and climate change.
Palaeoecology students also have access to world class facilities including a Radiocarbon Accelerator Mass Spectrometry 14 CHRONO Laboratory. Students gain valuable skills through access to these facilities and the data which is made available through various samples.

GAP offer students the flexibility to study Archaeology with a language or as a Joint Honours with other subjects within the Univerity. If undertaking Archaeology with a language, students will undertake a study year abroad scheme will be in Year 3 of the programme. Students will return to complete the final year of their degree within Queen’s.

FIELDWORK
Year 1 students have the opportunity to undertake Archaeology fieldwork at the end of semester 2. This important fieldwork experience gives students the chance to apply their knowledge and theory in a live excavation.
