Graduate Studies (Taught)


 

We offer postgraduate students the opportunity to advance their knowledge and career prospects through a range of courses, which are designed to reflect the School’s world-class reputation in the areas of archaeological, geographical and palaeoecological research.

Students learning will be enhanced through excellent teaching and laboratory facilities that support postgraduate training. This includes a state of the art GIS laboratory, laboratories for research on palaeoecology, pollen, plant macrofossils, beetles and mollusks, dendrochronology, tephra, stone weathering, human and animal bone and artefact study collections.

Postgraduate students also have access to our AMS Laboratory, one of the UK’s leading dating and chronology facilities.

Employability and Careers

Postgraduate courses offered by the School of Geography, Archaeology and Paleaoecology (GAP) can give an enhanced knowledge to students who want to progress into this field of work. Students get the opportunity to gain practical skills through our AMS Lab and also our in-house Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork (CAF), which is one of the few professional excavation units in the UK and Ireland based within a university environment. These allow students to gain the experiences and skills they will need to progress to employment.

Queen’s University Belfast also offer a range of initiatives and services which students can access to help improve their employability skills.

Please note: these courses can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis

Course duration and entry requirements:

An MSc / MA undertaken on a full-time basis takes one calendar year and two years as a part-time student. For acceptance onto an MSc / MA programme applicants will normally be expected to have achieved a first class or 2.1 Honours degree (UK) in a relevant subject or equivalent recognised qualification. Where a postgraduate PG Diploma or PG Certificate is offered, an applicant will normally be expected to have a high 2.2 Honours degree (57%) or above, or equivalent recognised qualification in a relevant subject.
