Postgraduate Research

The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences promotes and supports postgraduate research in a wide range of subjects in human health and disease.  Postgraduate research students carry out independent research projects within one of the four internationally recognised Research Centres within the School:  Cancer Research & Cell Biology, Infection and Immunity, Public Health and Vision and Vascular Science.  These Research Centres provide research opportunities across a wide range of medical and biomedical disciplines, including clinical and epidemiological studies, laboratory based science, bioinformatics and computational biology. Students from each of the Research Centres have an excellent record in completion of degrees and placement in careers in University, Industry and Healthcare.

Research degrees range from 2-year MPhil opportunities to PhD pathways lasting 3 or 4 years, depending on the funding source (MD, MCh and DSc can also be studied at the School). As a new research student you would join nearly 250 other postgraduate research students in the School and work alongside experienced staff and postdoctoral researchers in dynamic research teams. The majority of the research projects on offer emphasise the need to better understand diseases relevant to the Centre and there is a strong emphasis on translating new scientific discovery to patient benefit. New research students receive initial training in relevant laboratory and research techniques, which is later augmented with subject specific teaching. There will often be opportunities to present your work at national and international conferences, especially in the later stages of your work.
