PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in the UK, and typically arises from adenomatous polyps. Several modifiable dietary risk factors have been linked with the aetiology of, and survival from, CRC and adenomas. However, the role of dairy produce, calcium and vitamin D in CRC aetiology and progression remains controversial. Firstly, a systematic review of existing literature examining the relationships between a comprehensive range of measures of calcium status and exposure and colorectal cancer progression and survival will be undertaken. Secondly, dietary data from a large prospective study will be analysed to evaluate the role of calcium and dairy intake in colorectal adenoma and CRC risk. Lastly, the prognostic value of genetic polymorphisms of the calcium-sensing receptor gene will be studied in a population representative sample of 1,200 colon cancer patients from Northern Ireland.
A detailed note review on oncological treatments and colon cancer recurrence in these patients will be performed using the Northern Ireland Clinical Oncology Information System, within the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry. The role of calcium-sensing receptor gene polymorphisms, and their interactions with vitamin D related genetic polymorphisms, in colon cancer death and recurrence will be evaluated.
