Diploma in Mental Health

The Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health programme is designed for doctors in training who are preparing for a career in Psychiatry, General Practice or General Medicine and is suitable for Trainee Psychiatrists preparing for College examinations.

Topics will include current models of mental disorder, the major categories of mental illness, psychological and physical methods of treatment.

Clinical training forms a major component of the course.  Each postgraduate student should have a Clinical Tutor at his/her base Hospital.  Regular clinical supervision should be provided by Consultants and the Tutor should ensure that training is provided in Interviewing Skills and Psychiatric Assessment.

Regular attendance at Hospital Case Conferences and Academic Meetings is expected.  The Clinical Tutor should monitor all aspects of Hospital based training and provide a final report on clinical competence.

The clinical attachment in Psychiatry must overlap with the Academic Year of the programme of seminars attended.

Programme Delivery

The programme runs twice per year.  Formal teaching consists of a series of seminars held on Wednesday afternoons.  These commence on either the second week of September (for those doing the course in the autumn) or the second week of February (for those doing the course in the spring).  The next course will commence on Wednesday 8th February 2012.

Semester 1, 2011-12 Timetable

Semester 2, 2011-12 Timetable

Entrance requirements

Applicants must possess a recognised medical degree and be registered with the General Medical Council (UK or Ireland).  Enrolled students will be required to be in clinical posts recognised for General Professional Training for Psychiatry for at least four months.

How to Apply

Candidates should make applications through the Universities Online Admissions portal.  Guidance is available on the University’s Prospective Student pages.

  • In the ‘Additional Information’ section  of the online application you must indicate the dates between which you expect to be in a Psychiatry post during the academic year in which you are taking the DMH and where that post is expected to be (if known).
  • In the ‘Academic History’ section you should indicate your Degree title and classification as ‘MB, BCh Pass’ as the various honours classifications are not relevant to medical degrees.
  • If you are NOT a UK or Ireland graduate then you do not complete module details but instead must submit an ‘Academic Transcript’.  (This is a formal document that you should have obtained from your University and is not simply a brief CV.)  Details are given in the system about how to do this.
  • In the ‘Employment Experience’ section you are asked for past employment details.  Please give your last one or two medical posts.

Closing Date: Early applications are advisable but late applications will be accepted if places are available.
