Course Content

At Stage One, students are introduced to key concepts of theatre and performance in two core modules. Having successfully completed these, it is possible to continue on either  Minor, Joint, Major or Single pathways at Stages Two and Three. Students enrolled on major and single pathways have the widest choice and greatest access to practical modules and resources.

Queen's is not a vocational drama school or a conservatoire, however, practice is key to our program which combines critical analysis with creative practice as an aid in exploring and clarifying a theoretical understanding of our subject area. Current practice-based modules and areas of study include:  Community Theatre and Making Theatre, a suite of skills-based modules covering vocal and physical elements of performance as well as offering options in Stage Management and technical aspects of theatre production.

Beginning at Stage One, when students work with visiting professional directors to devise a short performance piece, project work is a recurrent element of practical teaching at Queen’s. At Stage Two, students enrolled on joint, major and single pathways have the opportunity to undertake a variety of roles in a professionally directed production, before embarking on their own independent projects at Stage Three. In the past, students have written their own scripts, adapted existing plays, devised new pieces, performed outdoors or in site-specific contexts, designed sets, costume and lighting, and of course directed and acted in productions of published scripts, from Shakespeare to Ravenhill, Chaplin to the Peep Show .

Our Working in Theatre module enables students to further extend practical skills and test them in a professional environment by undertaking a short work placement with a suitable host organisation during either semester of Stage Three. In recent years, these have included (among many others) a variety of roles at the new Lyric Theatre, Belfast Festival, Tinderbox Theatre Company, Prime Cut Productions, Ransom Productions and Replay Productions.

For those wishing to engage from a more theoretical and historical perspective, modules are currently offered in American, Irish, Northern Irish and British Theatre and in areas as diverse as: Theatre and Myth, Beckett in Performance, Modernist Theatre, Women in Theatre, and Theatre Criticism.

As befits a course that embraces both the practical and the analytical, assessment is by performance, presentation, viva, written coursework and exams
