Entrance Requirements

Students entering the programme will normally be required to have a 2.1 BSc/BEng in Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or a maths based engineering or physical science degree, or equivalent qualification recognised by the University. Students holding an appropriate MEng or MSc (Software conversion) will normally be required to have a 2.1 or commendation (distinction) respectively. Furthermore, additional criteria may be applied. All applicants must have significant mathematical and programming experience.

The CDT programme follows the US model in that the first year involves postgraduate taught modules in the specialist area, Cyber Security in this case. It is important to emphasise that the taught modules for the first year are taken from the existing CSIT MSc in Cyber Security.

How to apply

Applications to study a PhD are handled centrally by the University's Postgraduate Admissions Office. To apply, you should use the online application system available here.

We encourage early applications. The normal deadline for applications is 28th February. Late applications are possible, subject to the availability of places, but those received before the deadline will be given preference.

Please choose your referees carefully, since we shall be contacting them for an opinion as to your suitably for research.

Also, take care to describe clearly the level of your primary degree. If you obtained your primary degree from a university outside the UK it can speed up the application process if you can relate your qualification to the UK system.

Before submitting an online application form, applicants are strongly recommended to contact a member of academic staff to discuss their research interests and current research projects available in that area.
