The Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) brings together complimentary research clusters to carry out research focused on market informed Grand Challenge areas.

Information Security

Research undertaken in this field aims to innovate advances in cyber threat detection methods and algorithms and derive a new generation of real-time defensive technologies for the protection of infrastructures, users, services and e-businesses from financially, politically and socially incentivised cyber threats.

CSIT has a strong track record for the creation and implementation of security technologies and systems in data and network security, high-performance crypto technologies, homomorphic enryption, hardware accelerated content processors and DPI technologies, automated anomaly detection systems for networks and advanced video surveillance systems.

Innovations, technologies and intellectual property developed at CSIT have been commercialised by CSIT partners for a range of advanced network security and video surveillance systems. Innovations in content processing technologies have led to a number of new start-up companies in Northern Ireland. Research experitse includes:

Physical Security

Research undertaken in this field targets new event-centric computing paradigm which records and processes events, captured by a heterogeneous sensor network, as individuals enter a space and move through it. During the last decade, there has been massive investment in CCTV technology in the UK.

For this technology to be effective, CCTV has to become active by alerting security analysts in real-time so that they can prevent the undesirable behaviour. Such a quantum leap in capability will greatly increase the likelihood of offenders being caught, a major factor in crime prevention. Intelligent surveillance systems must be capable of tracking a person over a heterogeneous sensor network, provide robust sensor analytics for event recognition and facilitate features for complex event management.

Convergence of Physical and Cyber Security

The aim of this research is to bring about convergence between information and physical security technologies, through a complete system-of-systems solution that is trustworthy and maximises privacy. Traditional video surveillance technology is converging into networked digital-video surveillance with intelligent video analytics at the surveillance devices.

Concurrently, wire-line, wireless and mobile broadband technologies have significantly evolved and are now the fabric of the public communication infrastructure, capable of carrying multimedia content at multi-megabit rate.

Internet-based wire-line and mobile broadband access technology has become the preferred choice of network infrastructure for rapid and effective deployment of physical security technology. This however necessitates robust network and information security measures in order not to compromise physical content. Furthermore, securing critical communication infrastructures and cyber assets requires robust physical security and reliable access control.

The convergence of cyber and physical security is essential to set the framework for a unified approach for securing physical and cyber space. The research target three research topics:

  • Converged threat detection and handling
  • Overlaid ad-hoc networking
  • Access control

 

Wireless Enabled Security Systems

The aim of this research is to bring about advances in the use of High Frequency Electronic Circuits, and developing novel generic solutions to advanced problems associated with wireless front-end technology. The major research projects aligned with these areas of activities aim to provide associated enabling solutions for next generation mobile wireless products. Research expertise includes:

  • Frequency Selective Surface Filters for sub–terahertz space applications
  • Use of liquid crystal for steerable antennas
  • Stealth absorbers and frequency selective windows
  • Novel broadband antenna design
  • Far Field, Near Field and Reverberation Chamber Antenna Measurement
  • 60 GHz Gbit communications system design
