Retrodirective antenna arrays (RDA) automatically reflect an incident RF/microwave signal back in the direction of arrival without prior knowledge of the propagation environment and without the need for complex signal processing algorithms. The high gain antenna and self-steering properties of such arrays improve the read range and orientation sensitivity of a long range RFID system. Analogue implementation of such self-steering array results in adaptive real time operation and low power consumption.


Recently we have demonstrated a long range RFID system with mitigated orientation sensitivity. The full duplex RFID reader uses a four element patch active retrodirective array. It has a sensitivity level of -109dBm.At 16dBm transmit power, it offers over 8 metre read range and +/- 45 degrees transponder orientation.
