Ninety-six per cent of the University's carbon emissions come from energy usage. Energy is currently costing the University almost £6 million a year. This is made up of:

  • Electricity - £3.6 million
  • Oil - £0.3 million
  • Natural Gas - £1.3 million
  • Water - £0.6 million
As part of its Carbon Management Plan the University is primarily targeting emissions released due to the burning of gas, oil and by consuming purchased electricity.

What we are doing

  • The Estates Directorate is currently in the process of developing a system that will provide information on energy consumption to Schools/Directorates. As part of this a league table will be produced which will set out how each School/Directorate is performing. To achieve this more than 300 electricity sub-meters have recently been installed. The energy league tables will be available on this webpage.
  • Currently approximately 90 per cent of the University’s electricity is provided by companies that use renewable sources of energy.
  • A Sustainable Development Brief ensures all new buildings or major refurbishments exceed any energy requirements set down by Building Regulations.
  • A Building Energy Management System with a dedicated operator ensures that heating and ventilation are used as efficiently as possible.
