Our Global Research Centres
Working globally to tackle cyber crime
From bus tickets to banking, most of us rely heavily on the internet. But with 3.8 million cyber-attacks in the UK in 2016, our world-leading researchers are playing a leading role in cracking down on cybercrime for both today and the future.
Based at ECIT, researchers working in our Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) – the UK’s Innovation and Knowledge Centre for cyber security – are working to protect the privacy of personal and sensitive data.
There are two emerging trends in this area – building security directly into a device, and making a system that can be used across a range of platforms. Our experts have developed a technology called Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) which is based on both of these trends.
Communications for a smarter world
CWI is the largest research base in physical layer wireless in the UK and among the most innovative in the world. Our researchers focus on inventing new underpinning technologies for Mobile (5G & Beyond, Massive MIMO, URLLC), Medical (high performance wireless connectivity of wearable and active implantable medical devices) and Space (connectivity of Earth Observation satellites).
Addressing the information explosion
Researchers at our Centre for Data Science and Scalable Computing are investigating advancements in Artificial Intelligence and the computational challenges relevant to the big data phenomena.
As we enter an Age of data explosion, our researchers are using core machine learning and data science to get insight and prediction from data in heterogeneous forms from billions of sources. Combined with expertise in emerging large scale and edge architectures, DSSC is working to provide this generation with AI at Scale, helping to break through current limitations in medicine, security, sustainability and commerce.
