The Chair of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be both a Principal Member within the Global Research Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT) and be an academic leader within the Queen’s University School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EEECS).

The mission of ECIT is to expand the possibilities of a future digital society, and accelerate economic growth through research and innovation. As one of only four Global Research Institutes at Queen’s, we have significant plans for growth and ambitions to further develop as a world leader in research and innovation in the complementary fields of cyber security, wireless technologies, scalable computing and data science.

Established in 2004, ECIT is the research anchor on Catalyst Inc. (, formerly the Northern Ireland Science Park), an innovation campus, which is home to almost 200 high tech companies employing 3,000 engineers and knowledge economy workers. In ECIT some 200 staff work in a highly collegial and collaborative research environment which supports and rewards those who deliver outstanding research. 

About the post

To deliver against an ambitious plan to initiate new world-leading research programmes in ECIT and grow ECIT’s research income to £11million pa, the Chair in AI will work closely with the ECIT Director to promote the institutes research culture and ambitions and contribute to ECIT’s innovation agenda. A key focus of this position is to lead foundational research in core areas such as AI knowledge representation, reasoning, learning, planning and decision making. In addition, the Chair in AI will have the international esteem to inspire confidence, and lead and develop teams of exceptional academics, to propose high risk and high impact projects that address global challenges.

As a Professor in the School of EEECS the Chair in AI will provide leadership in curriculum development and deliver dynamic undergraduate and post graduate programmes utilising innovative teaching and learning methods that inspire the next generation of digital industry leaders. As a member of the School‘s Academic Management Forum the Chair in AI will initiate, influence and lead strategic initiatives within the Institute, School, Faculty and across the University. The successful applicant will be building on a developed international profile, and can promote Computer Science and Software Engineering education at Queen’s to become a recognised global centre of excellence.
