Set up in 1999 in Queen's University Belfast, the Gibson Institute is funded by the Gibson Trust a charitable foundation established in 1913.  The Institute is involved in education and research in the areas of sustainability, rural development, environmental management, food marketing, renewable energy, nutrition, physical activity and public health.

The Gibson Institute is a key member of the university's sustainability initiative and affiliated to the Institute for a Sustainable World (ISW) at Queens.  It is a partner in the Combined Research Councils Centre of Excellence for Public Health Research in Northern Ireland and a partner in the university's ASSET Centre for assured safe and traceable food.
