PhD Workshops

Monday 11th September 2017

Queen’s University Belfast welcomes all PhD attendees at the Planning Research Conference 2017 to our new Graduate School to participate in a pre-conference PhD workshop. It will be an informal opportunity for some further skills development and networking amongst planning students from the UK and Ireland. The main aim of the workshop is to assist and guide doctoral researchers in the starting phase or a more advanced stage of their PhD research. The focus of the workshop is on ‘doing research’, on addressing planning and urbanism issues in a scientifically grounded way.

The Workshop will include a plenary session on how academia can engage constructively with planning practice by Professor Malcolm Tait (University of Sheffield) and Michael Harris (RTPI Policy & Research). This will be followed by intensive roundtables organised on a thematic basis, which will be chaired by leading scholars from UK and Irish planning schools. These roundtables will allow participants the opportunity to discuss their research topic and methodology before getting guidance from the session chairs and the other participants.

•    Environmental Governance
•    Health, Planning and Wellbeing
•    Participation in Planning
•    Rural Planning
•    Urban Design and Public Spaces
•    Culture, Economy and Society

The afternoon session will involve a tour of live projects in Belfast that illustrate the context for planning ‘spatial justice’ in a divided city. It will include visits to the city’s major regeneration schemes and the interface locations to learn about efforts to re-connect the communities.
