
PGR Fundamentals contains key information relevant to the Queen’s University postgraduate researcher. The University offers a number of postgraduate research degrees, ranging from a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) to professional doctorates. As the majority of postgraduate research studentships undertaken in the University are PhDs (Doctorates of Philosophy) this website is tailored particularly to PhD students, though much of its content is relevant and helpful to all Queen’s University postgraduate research students.
PGR Fundamentals sees the postgraduate research degree ‘experience' as operating across two strands: the first is entitled Getting Your Research Degree and focuses on the various processes necessary for successful completion of your thesis; the second strand, Beyond Your Research Degree, focuses on building up your transferable skills and employability both within and outside academia.
Our purpose is to provide you with an outline of the formal and informal procedures involved in each stage of your PhD. To this end, we've broken up the 'life span' of the research degree into 3 stages: Early, Middle and Final. Within each stage, you will find a number of sections, each of which provides information on an aspect of the PhD experience particularly relevant to that stage; for example, in the ‘Early’ stage, you will find information on the differentiation process.
