Key information for 2013 Registration
You will receive information in the post about registration in August/early September.
The Enrolment and Registration Wizard will be open for students to register online (or for returning students to re-register online) from Wednesday 18th September. Every student must complete this online process. New students will also be required to register in person at Queen's University Belfast, bringing required documentation with them (e.g. evidence of fee sponsorship).
Enrolment and Registration will take place from Monday 23 September - Friday 27 September 2013 for postgraduate students in The Space, on the first floor of the Student's Union.
Late enrolment and registration will take place from Monday 30 September - Friday 4 October in either The Space or the Student Guidance Centre.
The Postgraduate Student Centre organises a week long series of events and activities designed to help you settle in and get to know your fellow postgraduate students. Full details are on our Welcome Week page. Follow us on Twitter (@pgvoice1)to get the latest updates on events throughout the week.
Your School will also run orientation events and most faculties host postgraduate parties to introduce newbies to staff and students.
The Student's Union runs a Fresher's Week, which will include a Fresher's Fair. You should sign up to a club or society that interests you.
There are also a number of dedicated postgraduate societies. These currently include the PG Cake Club, Bring your own Book (BYOB) Book Club, and a postgraduate football team. These are all on facebook and can be accessed via the Postgraduate Student Centre page.
The Postgraduate Student Centre runs weekly events throughout the year to give all postgraduate students an opportunity to meet others beyond their own class and discipline. Come along to Breakfast Club every Monday at 10.30 and Happy Hour every Wednesday (15.00-16.00).
Classes begin the week after Welcome Week. Depending on your discipline you may find that you have few contact hours on campus and are expected to do a signifcantly greater amount of independant study than you did as an undergrad.
Get into a good routine of work early on to ensure you make the most effective use of your time. Many students adopt a 9.00-17.00 working day for example to help them organise their day. Figure out what works well for you and stick to it.
Make an effort to get to know other postgraduate taught and research students in your School in addition to getting to know the Staff. You will probably have met the School Postgraduate coordinator at your induction session. You may need to identify a potential supervisor for your disseration or final project. Part of your course may involve group work so it is a good idea to try to get know your peers early on.
Familiarise yourself with the Library and online resources. The Library often holds discipline specific training sessions in the first few weeks of term so keep an eye out for these on the Library website.
The Learning Development Service offers workshops and one to one advice sessions throughout the academic year. A number of these, such as Dissertation Writing, are specifically geared to postgraduate taught students. You will receive emails regarding PGT specific workshops and details of how to sign up throughout the year.

All first year PhD students must complete an induction day training programme in the early stages of the semester. This is a great opportunity to meet people, as well as get important information about organising your research. Contact pg.training@qub.ac.uk for further details.
Your School should also organise an induction day for new students. This will provide vital information on departmental procedures, workspace, School facilities, research seminars etc.
You should set up an appointment with your supervisor within the first few weeks. The supervisor can answer your queries and get you on track to begin your research.
The McClay Library at QUB provides tours and tutorials throughout the first semester. Get to know your Subject Librarian who will be a useful contact to guide you through the resources available to you in your area. You will find information on Subject Librarians here or on the library website.
Students in receipt of funding will be paid in monthly stipends - this is paid in arrears on the 25th of each month.
(For example, if you register to begin your research in September, the first payment will be paid into your bank account on 25th October).
If you have any queries or worries about funding, you can contact pg.centre@qub.ac.uk
