Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences

Clinical Medicine at Queen's - From discovery to recovery

The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences has over 500 faculty, 2000 undergraduate students, 600 postgraduate students and an annual turnover of some £63m. It is made up of three education centres, (Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences) and an Institute of Health Sciences incorporating four research centres - all with a major focus on translational research.

The School’s vision is to drive excellence in teaching and in sustainable high quality clinical and biomedical research programmes, leading to global improvements in healthcare research and care. This is underpinned by a £100m capital development programme and a global recruitment drive (www.qub.ac.uk/mdbs).

Significant achievements over the past five years include:

  • Appointment of 53 new clinical and non-clinical academic staff;
  • £100m investment in the development of the Health Sciences Campus;
  • Award of the Diamond Jubilee Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education;
  • Opening of a new WellcomeWolfson Clinical Research Facility;
  • Creation of a £32m Centre for Experimental Medicine, underpinned by a successful UK Research Partnership Investment Fund grant;
  • Athena SWAN Silver award.

Over the last two years we have had a highly successful on-going recruitment campaign resulting in the appointment of a significant number of international Chairs in a range of clinical and scientific disciplines.
