Salary

Working in the University attracts a salary which is very competitive in the local Northern Ireland market.  Salary progression is incremental and schemes are in place to provide additional rewards for exceptional performance.

  • Grade 2: £15,356 - £16,961
  • Grade 3: £16,961 - £21,220
  • Grade 4: £20,046 - £23,879
  • Grade 5: £23,164 - £28,452
  • Grade 6: £26,829 - £33,943

All the above scales include contribution points.

Pension

A contributory pension scheme is operated which provides excellent retirement benefits.  In addition to the employee’s contribution, the University, as the employer, makes a considerable contribution.

Clerical staff in grades 1 - 5 are members of the Retirement Benefits Plan (RBP) which is a defined benefit pension scheme. Grade 6 staff are members of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (known as USS).

Holidays

Staff have access to a generous holiday entitlement of 42 days paid leave a year (pro rata for part time staff). This is made up of 23 days annual leave entitlement, 9 days bank and public holidays and 10 closure days.

Training and Development

The University is committed to providing all staff with the opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills. An annual training and development programme is available to all staff. There are dedicated courses for support staff to help develop their careers. Full details are available here.

Family Friendly and Work Life Balance

Queen’s innovative approach to family friendly employment initiatives has been recognised at the Employers for Childcare Family Friendly Employer Awards 2015. The University won in the Public Sector Category of the annual awards which recognise and celebrate organisations that provide and promote family friendly working practices.

‌Recognising the changing demands of family life, several schemes and benefits are offered to help staff achieve balance with work and home life. The related policies are outlined below.

  • The Flexible Work Policy allows staff to apply to adjust their working patterns to support their personal work life balance.
  • The Maternity, Adoptive and Paternity Leave Policies outline leave entitlements available to working parents. The University offers enhanced payments beyond the statutory minimum.
  • Working parents can also apply for unpaid leave under the Parental Leave Policy to care for their children.
  • The University has three main Child Care sites within the wider campus offering a wide range of Child Care support.
  • Bereavement and Dependent Leave affords members of staff time off when difficult circumstances arise.
  • The aim of the Career Break Scheme is to facilitate members of staff who wish to take an unpaid break from their career, for example, to allow staff to carryout personal caring responsibilities or to conduct further education or appropriate research activity

Child Care Vouchers

Working parents at Queen's can give up or “sacrifice” part of their wages or salary in exchange for Childcare Vouchers as a more flexible way to meet the costs of childcare.

Staff Wellbeing

Staff Wellbeing at Queen's offers numerous health related programmes to create awareness and improve the health of staff, including planned and regular health promotion events tied in with national campaigns. Details of upcoming events are available in News and Events. Regular lunchtime Yoga, Pilates and Tone and Trim classes are available to staff at Queen's.

Travel Loan

Staff can avail of a significant interest free travel loan towards the purchase of an annual travel card.

Staff Discounts

All staff are provided with a PERKS directory containing many discounts for shopping, meals, social activities and hotel accommodation.
