POSITION : Managing Editor

SALARY : £36,532 - £47,666 per annum (including contribution points).
ANTICIPATED INTERVIEW DATE : 25 November 2009.
CONTRACT DURATION : 5 years.

JOB PURPOSE :
To ensure the smooth running of the Cochrane Developmental, Psychosocial and Learning Problems Review Group editorial base by providing specialised editorial support to authors, maintaining communication between the groups editors and its authors, managing the process of statistical and external peer review and to ensure the assimilation and circulation of information from relevant policy making bodies.

MAJOR DUTIES :
Establish and maintain liaison between reviewers and the editorial base.
Provide methodological advice and editorial advice to authors on the preparation of Cochrane Systematic Reviews (similar editor support to the preparation of book chapters and publication for peer reviewed journal papers, but often with added 'capacity building' input).
Assess training needs of authors and assist them to acquire such training at Cochrane workshops around the world and/or through email support and long distance learning packages.
Assist reviewers to submit protocols and ensure targets are met.
Co-ordinate the editorial process and maintain accurate editorial group records.
Organise the peer review process of all protocols and systematic reviews published by the CDPLPG.
Ensure that all legal and publisher required permissions related to publications are obtained.
Organise updating, maintenance and re-editing of reviews as required.
Produce a regular newsletter outlining group activities and achievements.
Foster good communication and a positive attitude within the Group.
Liaise with other Cochrane Review Group to avoid duplication of effort and ensure good communication.
Electronic submission of the group module to our publishers, Wiley Blackwell, each quarter or as required.
Preparation of editorials for specialist journals.
Presentation of lectures/seminars/posters at professional and lay meetings.
Display of newsletters, leaflets and posters at conferences.
Application for grants to further the work of the Group.
Providing direct support to reviewers in core areas of systematic review methodology, including basic statistical advice.
Organising and hosting meetings/training sessions for reviewers; liaison between the editors and other policy makers.
Helping train reviewers in Cochrane Collaboration software; assisting in development procedures and relevant documentation for production of reviews.
Carry out day-to-day administrative duties associated with the post and undertake any other duties that fall within the general ambit of the post.
Planning and Organising:
Although a member of a small team, the postholder is expected to work independently and to take a considerable amount of initiative in decision making and co-ordinating the day to day activities of the group.
Has a significant influence on the strategic aims and business plan of the group.
Resource Management Responsibilities:
Manages a small team of specialists to ensure delivery of a significant specialist service.
Prepares and manages budgets, and annual monitoring reports.
Prepares grant applications as appropriate.
Internal and External Relationships:
Work as part of a team, often to tight deadlines, with other members of the Review Group's editorial base.
Liaising with University library staff as necessary.
Attend the Annual Cochrane Colloquium, held in the autumn in different countries each year and the UK and All Ireland Cochrane Contributors meeting held annually in March or April, and other meetings as required.
Maintain and encourage communication with the Campbell Collaboration, a 'sister' to the Cochrane Collaboration with a mission statement including interventions in the areas of education, crime and social welfare, and with which CDPLPG is jointly registered.
Work to foster joint working on selected reviews of common interest through the process of 'co-registration'.
Contribute to the work of the Cochrane Collaboration including taking part in meetings and committees (at times representing colleagues) in order to learn new skills, promote better working practices and/or develop working policies.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA :
1. Degree level education in the social sciences or related subject, a health care subject or publishing and/or substantial experience with systematic review development.
2. At least 4 years relevant management and supervisory experience to include.
3. Strong administrative and organisational abilities.
4. Understanding of the principles of systematic review methodology.
5. Understanding of managing budgets/resources.
6. Excellent computing and keyboard skills.
7. Understanding of/ or willingness to learn about the basics of the wide scope of the CDPLPG.
8. Well developed communication skills.
9. Well developed liaison and negotiating skills.
10. Interpersonal and motivating skills.
11. Ability to manage resources and staff.
12. Careful, analytical and conscientious approach to work.
13. Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to relate to people through a variety of media.
14. Able to attend international meetings and training events in the UK.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA :
1. PhD.
2. Postgraduate qualification in publishing, health technology assessment or meta-analysis advantageous.
3. Experience of carrying out systematic reviews.
4. Ability to produce, monitor and assess estimates/costs and work within budget and to understand basic statistical concepts of meta-analysis and basic epidemiological methods.
5. Able to work with a wide range of people.
6. A second language would be helpful.
