Professor battles it out at ideas conference
Professor Piers Hellawell from the School of Creative Arts
Professor Piers Hellawell from the School of Creative Arts recently took part in The Battle of Ideas, the annual conference on matters of public concern.
Organised by The Institute of Ideas and held in the Barbican, the conference aims to spark public conversations on the key issues facing society, including the social, artistic, economic, political and scientific issues of our times.
Composer Piers Hellawell was one of 350 speakers who participated in the Conference which was attended by over 2000 delegates.
Professor Hellawell spoke on two panels concerned with the place of the arts today:
- ‘In search of originality: navigating the artistic canon’ - concerned with the place of serious artistic output in a crowded modern society
- ‘Baby Culture Vultures’ - debated whether Government initiatives to get children to galleries and theatres would be better directed toward strengthening artistic training in the curriculum.
Professor Hellawell was a speaker at the 2005 Battle of Ideas conference and provided a keynote article on music education to the 2007 conference.
