Staff and graduates named in Birthday Honours
Dr Fiona Stewart has been awarded an MBE for services to clinical genetics in Northern Ireland
The contribution Queen’s staff and graduates make to society has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Two members of staff, Dr Fiona Stewart and Dr Stephen Myers, and 12 graduates have received honours.
Dr Fiona Stewart, Consultant in Genetic Medicine at Belfast City Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen’s, has been awarded the MBE for services to clinical genetics in Northern Ireland.
Dr Stewart has been a consultant in Genetic Medicine at Belfast City hospital since 1995 and was clinical team leader from 2001 until December 2012. As an honorary lecturer, she teaches students about clinical genetics. As well as her clinical practice in Belfast she chairs the Genetic Testing and Evaluation working group for the UKGTN in London. She is also involved in the area of rare diseases and is involved in the implementation of the Department of Health’s plan to implement the European directive on rare diseases.
Dr Stewart said: “The award means a great deal to me as it recognises the importance of Genetic Medicine at a time when great improvements are being made in this area. I do feel passionately that we need to improve services for people who have genetic disorders.”
Dr Stephen Myers, Director of Accelerators and Technology at CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) and Honorary Professor in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has been awarded an OBE. Dr Myer’s OBE is in recognition of his remarkable services to science and technology. With over forty years of experience at CERN the Belfast born physicist has led a team of over 2,000 researchers and engineers working on the Large Hadron Collider, the world’s most powerful atom smasher, which is used to answer fundamental questions about the building blocks of the Universe.
